Vanity Basin Installation

REPLACING A VANITY BASIN WITH A NEW ONE

Give your bathroom a dramatic makeover in one long weekend by replacing the vanity cabinet, sink and faucets. Changing a vanity is relatively easy. All you need are basic carpentry and for the plumbing you will need to call on professional plumbers like Active Plumbing to help you out. Here is our quick guide to help you replace your old vanity basin with a new one.

REMOVING THE OLD VANITY BASIN

Shut down the water supply. The valves are usually below the sink. Otherwise, turn it off from the main valve. Next, turn on the taps to get rid of any water pressure remaining in the lines. Take out the slip nut at the top of the P-trap. Take out the whole trap if needed. Make sure that you have a small bucket nearby to catch any water remaining in the trap. Disengage the water supply lines. If needed, use wrench to loosen them. With a utility knife, cut the sealant along the backsplash. Next, take out the sink top and free it from the wall.

Extract the sink top from the vanity base. Some tops are attached with screws and some may be glued to the base. If yours is glued, employ a hammer and chisel to pull it out it from the base. To detach the vanity, loosen screws at the back of the base and take the vanity out.

SECURING THE NEW VANITY BASIN

Find the wall studs and mark them a little higher than the crest of the new vanity. Pinpoint the location of the new vanity’s screw holes. Set the vanity in place. Be certain that the vanity is flush against the wall. To do this, make use of shims and a carpenter’s level. If you want, you can also install a new faucet through following the instructions of the manufacturer.

When the vanity is properly placed, use screws to secure it to the wall. Run a bead of tub-and-tile caulk along the top edges of the vanity base. Ensure that the vanity top is precisely attached on top of the vanity. Reconnect the water supply line and change the p-trap if it’s worn out. Tighten and simplify the connections. Apply a thin bead of caulk prudently around the counter top edges. Make sure that your application is even without any smudging. You can use your fingertip or a damp rag to smooth the application.
